In Japan, the WagonR competes with other kei cars such as the Honda N-One, Nissan DayZ, Subaru Stella and Toyota Pixis Joy.
A popular name in its home country and some global markets, WagonR has got a new model named ‘Smile’. It packs in several updates to the exteriors and interiors. Three variants are on offer, with prices ranging from yen 1.29 million (~Rs 8.60 lakh) to yen 1.71 million (~Rs 11.39 lakh).
Suzuki WagonR Smile Design and Features
Though this new model uses the WagonR nameplate, its design is actually based on the Suzuki Spacia. Launched in 2013, Spacia is currently in its second generation. Similarities can be seen in the boxy design of the WagonR Smile and Spacia. However, most of the other styling bits have been a major improvement. The WagonR Smile comes across as more youthful and attractive. It even gets a retro flavor with the cute oval headlamps.
Justifying its name, the WagonR Smile features a ‘smiling’ front fascia. This is made possible by the use of a wide strip that divides the large air dam into two sections. These essentially depict the upper and lower lips of a smiling face. The front grille can be seen with a lot of chrome, which serves to enhance the retro profile of the car. The side and rear sections of the car have a relatively simple design.
With an aim to target a wider customer base, the WagonR Smile will be offered in a wide range of single-tone and dual-tone color options. Many of these have a floating roof effect with black pillars. In the dual-tone options, customers can choose from a white color or a blacked-out ceiling.
From the inside, the focus is on providing optimum comfort and convenience to the users. Buttons and utilities are intelligently placed to ensure easy access and minimal effort. The dashboard has a clutter-free design and looks great in its dual-tone theme. At the centre, the car gets a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation.
Other key features include the use of special glass that can resist both heat and UV rays from outside. Vibration and extraneous noise have also been reduced with the special body structure of the car.
electric sliding rear door
The primary USP of the Suzuki WagonR Smile is its electric powered rear sliding doors. The update is based on the emerging market trends that have seen a significant increase in the demand for Mini Cars with Sliding Doors. For many consumers, sliding doors provide much easier entry and exit than standard hinged doors.
Suzuki WagonR Smile Engine
The WagonR Smile is powered by a 660cc inline 3-cylinder DOHC 12-valve engine. The ISG is a mild-hybrid option with the same engine equipped with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. It is capable of producing 49 PS of maximum power at 6,500 rpm and peak torque of 58 Nm at 5,000 rpm. All the variants are mated to a CVT unit. Both 2WD and 4WD options are available for the WagonR Smile.
