MG Astor ready for launch in October – It will take on the Creta and Seltos in the compact SUV segment
As the festive season begins, automakers are gearing up for new launches. MG Astor is one such launch which is being watched with great enthusiasm. Set to open up for bookings soon, various specifications and engine specifications have been revealed, some of which are in the first segment.
MG Astor is a petrol powered variant of the MG ZS EV. It is designed on the philosophy of emotional mobility that connects people to the car and is the first SUV to come with a personal AI assistant and the first autonomous (Level 2) technology in the segment.
MG Aster Automatic Braking
MG Astor This is not the first car to get the ADAS feature. It is already on offer along with the Gloster and will soon be seen on the Mahindra XUV700. Luxury automakers like Volvo and Mercedes also offer ADAS features in select vehicles in India.
One of the important features offered through ADAS is autonomous or automatic braking. This is an important safety feature that is expected to be a common feature on all cars in the future. It has now been highlighted in the new MG Astor TVC, which can be seen below.
MG Astor will be positioned below Hector in the company lineup. It will be offered in five variants – Style, Super, Smart, Sharp and Savvy. The color options on offer will include White, Red, Orange, Black and Silver. The dimensions will stand at 4,323 mm in length, 1,809 mm in width and 1,650 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,585 mm. It will get a ground clearance of 154mm, a turning radius of 5.1m and a fuel tank of 45 liters capacity.
Set to be the most feature-loaded SUV in its segment, the MG Astor will sport a massive 65-inch panoramic sunroof that the company calls the Skylight roof. It gets 5 cameras providing 360 degree view and 6 radars for Level 2 autonomous driving features, which include Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Warning etc. Targeting a 5 star NCAP safety rating, the Astor will get Hill Hold Assist, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control and a total of 6 airbags with ABS and EBD are offered as standard.
The interiors will feature a 7-inch mid-LCD screen, a 10.1-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a total of 5 USB ports. It will also come with Maps and Navigation with MapMyIndia and JioSaavn apps for music and video, an industry-wide way to reserve a parking slot and access unlimited information with Wikipedia through a head unit powered by Park+. Engine and Transmission
The MG Astor will be powered by petrol engine options. The 1.5L VTI naturally aspirated engine will make 110hp power and 144Nm torque mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or an 8-step CVT. The 1.3-litre turbocharged unit will make 140 hp power and 220 Nm torque mated to a 6-speed torque converter gearbox.
Like other MG cars launched so far, the Astor is also expected to come with an aggressive starting price tag. It can become the first car in the segment to cost less than Rs 9 lakh. We expect the MG Astor to be priced in the Rs 8-13 lakh range. In terms of competition, it takes on the Hyundai Creta which is the current segment leader.
