SUVs and hatchbacks dominated the list of top 25 cars sold in India in August 2021
The top 25 list includes 9 Maruti Suzuki models, which contributed over 46 per cent in the last month. In August 2021, over 77 percent of all passenger vehicles sold in India were from the top 25 cars, with 5 from Hyundai, 3 from Tata Motors and 2 from Kia, Honda and Mahindra as well as Toyota.

Once again, Maruti Suzuki occupied the top 3 positions with its three cars. The Baleno hatchback was the best-selling car in the country in August 2021 with 15,646 units sold, an increase of 46 per cent as compared to 10,742 units sold in August 2020. Next in line was the Alto hatchback, which though ranked No. 2, suffered a de-growth. 8 percent yo. Sales in August 2020 were 14,397 units which declined to 13,236 in the last one month.
Maruti Vitara Brezza was the third best selling car in August 2021 with sales of 12,906 units and a growth of 87 per cent in demand as against 6,903 units sold in August 2020. Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback and Eeco van finished with Swift at 5th and 6th position respectively. Sales of the Eeco jumped 7 per cent to 10,666 units, down 16 per cent to 12,483 units.
Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the list of top 25 cars sold last month. The WagonR hatchback at number 8 stood at 9,628 units with a decline of 30 per cent, while the number 14 S-Presso stood at 7,225 units with a growth of 36 per cent. The Ertiga MPV featured a 33 per cent de-growth and 6,251 units sold at No. 16 in the last month and the No. 20 DZire sedan saw a 58 percent decline with 5,714 units sold.
Top SUVs August 2021 – Brezza, Creta, Nexon, Seltos
Hyundai Motors India had broken into Maruti’s stronghold with sales of its Creta SUV growing by 7 per cent year-on-year. Sales stood at 11,758 units in August 2020, which increased to 12,597 in the previous month. The Hyundai Venue, i10 Grand, i20 Elite and the recently launched Alcazar also make it to the bottom of the list with the company’s best-selling Creta SUV. Venue sales grew 1 percent year-on-year while i10 Grand and i20 Elite sales declined by 21 percent and 5 percent, respectively. Alcazar’s sales stood at 3,468 units.
Tata Motors had 3 models in the list of top 25 cars sold. The Nexon was at number seven with a 93 percent year-on-year sales growth. The sales which were 5,179 units in August 2020 increased to 10,006 units last month. This is the second consecutive month that the Nexon has sold over 10,000 units per month.
Altroz sales at number 17 grew 25 per cent to 6,175 units from 4,651 units sold in August 2020, while the sales of the Tiago hatchback declined just 1 per cent to 5,658 units in the previous month.
Kia Seltos and Sonet are ranked ninth and 12th. Seltos sales declined 19 per cent to 8,619 units in August 2021, down from 10,655 units sold in August 202, while Sonet was a new entry with 7,752 units sold last month.
Honda Amaze and City registered a growth of 79 per cent and 43 per cent, respectively, in the previous month. The new Mahindra Thar entered the 23rd position last month with sales of 3,493 units. The total sales registered by the top 25 cars were a little over 2 lakh units in August 2021.
